Job Summary:
Under general supervision, ensures the safety of patrons of an aquatic facility by preventing and responding to emergencies and performs routine pool maintenance activities to ensure a safe,

clean pool environment.

  • Regular attendance at Employer's place of business and/or during particular hours, as assigned, is an essential function of this position.  Employee must comply with and follow YWCA’s attendance policy at all times, unless a reasonable accommodation is requested and granted, as required by law. 

  • Maintains constant supervision of patrons in pool area, enforcing all rules.

  • Implements water safety practices and maintains all applicable American Red Cross Water Safety Standards.

  • Prevents accidents through the enforcement of policies, rules, regulations and ordinances governing the conduct of persons using the swimming pool.

  • Responds to all emergencies in pool area in accordance with procedures and American Red Cross Lifeguard methods: providing emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.

  • Maintains good work relations with Front Desk staff, parents and participants, communicating in a courteous and professional manner.

  • Conducts pool safety area checks and chemical maintenance following prescribed schedule and procedures.

  • Performs routine maintenance functions including cleaning the facility, helping with pool vacuuming, doing grounds work

    (i.e., picking up and hauling trash, pulling weeds in deck area expansion joints), daily cleaning of rest rooms, and picking up parking lot and other designated areas. 

  • Reports needed equipment repair or water quality concerns to supervisor by end of shift.

  • Prepares and maintains appropriate activity and incidence reports. and keep gutters c

  • Properly stores all chemicals in accordance with local city/county health and federal requirements. 

  • Ensures pool meets city/county health standards and that chemicals are handled using proper masks. 

  • Helps organize swimming classes for participants from pre-school to adults. 

  • Teaches or assists instructors in teaching swim lessons. 

  • Substitutes for swim lessons and water exercise classes as needed.

  • Opens and closes the pool at the scheduled times.

  • Recruit’s participants for pool activities.

  • Attends training and meetings as required.

  • Interprets YWCA purpose, imperative, and mission to staff and public.

  • Communicates all problems and questions to supervisor.

  • Communicates with all levels of staff and public as appropriate to the job.

  • Follows all YWCA policies and procedures, including safety procedures, at all times.

  • Responsible for all equipment, supplies, documents, and materials related to job.

  • Complies with all federal, state, and local regulations.

Job Requirements:

  • High school degree preferred or be a minimum of 16 years of age enrolled in school with an active student status.

  • Must possess a nationally recognized lifeguard certification. Certification must remain current throughout employment with the YWCA.

  • One (1) year lifeguard experience preferable, or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Must be First Aid/CPR certified.  Certification must remain current throughout employment with the YWCA.

  • Must have knowledge of water safety and pool chlorination and filtration systems.     

  • Must possess excellent swimming skills and pass a swim test.
