JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, leads and coordinates individual or group swim lessons and water safety skills. Provide a fun and educational swim lesson experience for both children and adults of all ages.

  • Regular attendance at Employer’s place of business and/or during particular hours, as assigned, is an essential function of this position. Employee must comply with and follow YWCA’s attendance policy at all times, unless a reasonable accommodation is requested and granted, as required by law.

  • Instructs individuals and groups in aquatic and motor skill activities including, but not limited to, floating, preschool swimming, learn-to-swim, lifesaving, water safety, etc.

  • Prepares and masters the instruction of swim lesson class following YWCA guidelines and procedures.

  • Prepares weekly swim lesson plans for varying levels of participants’ or participant groups. Follows and develops lesson plans for Level I, Level II, Level III and advanced level swimmers or swimmer groups.

  • Teach and develop swim technique and swim strokes to move swimmers to more advance levels.

  • Educates participants on water safety and drowning prevention do’s and don’ts while around water.

  • Designs swim sessions to encourage safety and maximum class participation. Enforces safety regulations, striving to prevent accidents, and maintains pool discipline at all times.

  • Prepares class meeting area and ensures that classes start and end on time. Enthusiastically greets students before each class.

  • Sets up and stores class equipment before and after each session. Monitors class equipment to ensure it remains in serviceable condition.

  • Ensures that participants adhere to safety and injury prevention policies and procedures; reports accidents and prepares accident reports, as required.

  • Advises participants on swim lesson procedures and policies, as appropriate.

  • Monitors participant intensity levels.  Watches for signs of overexertion and gives periodic exertion level checks.

  • Assists participants before and after lessons and keeps the facility clean.

  • Tracks progress of clients, maintaining client files as appropriate.

  • Monitors class and participant attendance and enrollment.

  • Attends in-service training designed to review emergence action plan, water rescues, safety team EAP execution, etc.

  • Attends swim lesson instructor development trainings.

  • Helps with health fairs and special events. 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school degree or equivalent or be a minimum of 16 years of age enrolled in school with an active student status.

  • One (1) year practical experience in swim training and conditioning, water safety and aquatic fitness; or any equivalent experience or training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Possession of a nationally recognized life guard certification preferred. Certification must remain current throughout employment with the YWCA.

  • Must possess swimming skills to successfully pass a swim test.

  • Sound knowledge of proper swimming techniques and water safety rules.

  • Must successfully complete the in-house Swim Lesson Instructor Certification before instructing in YWCA

  • May require discipline-specific certification from but not limited to American Red Cross (Water Safety Instructor or Basic Swim Instructor).

  • CPR and First Aid Certification required.

  • Position requires superb physical condition.

  • Must be able to effectively communicate with people of all ages.

  • Must be willing to work weekends, late afternoons, and evenings and/or before and after normal hours.

  • Ability to create a fun atmosphere in class required.

  • Must be able to perform job in safest possible manner due to high injury risk.

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.

  • May be required to have access to personal vehicle with valid driver’s license and proof of sufficient liability insurance if assignments required multi-site classes.
